Welcome to the web page of our course Public Speaking! This humble web page is an on-going project I am undertaking as part of my dedicated initiative to transcend the borders of our classroom. As a support to augment our limited class contact hours, we will likewise utilize the functionalities of the website edmodo.com to the fullest. This site will host our online quizzes, online assignments, etc.

To complete your argumentation and debate learning experience, enroll in our edmodo.com online class platform. Here’s how:

  3. Click the button “I’m a Student”
  4. Fill in the needed information such as: First Name, Last Name, the group code, Email address, choose a Username and a Password (you need to remember the Username and Password), then click the button “Submit”
  5. You are now enrolled! You need to customize your profile by adding information about you, upload a profile image, and other details.
  6. Your interface is set like a social media feed where you can post status updates, message your friends and classmates including your teacher, friend/unfriend someone and follow someone or some posts.

Course description

The course aims to develop the students’ ability to write and deliver different kinds of speeches. It includes a review of the principles of correct breathing, voice control, pronunciation, gesture, movement and enhancement of self-confidence.  This course also gives stress on intensifying the analytical and critical thinking of student by making rejoinders to the issues concerning the state or condition of society, politics, economics and life in general.

Course intended learning outcomes (Cilos)

At the time of completion of this course, the students shall be able to:

  1. Demonstrate analytical and critical thinking through written and oral speeches.
  2. Deliver speeches effectively in English applying the principles of public speaking.
  3. Express oneself in English with confidence.
  4. Develop own unique speaking personality.

Prelim Period (Weeks 1–6)

I. Introduction; TIP Vision and Mission; TIP Graduate Attributes/ Institutional Intended Learning Outcomes; Program Objectives/ Program Intended Learning Outcomes; Course Objectives/ Course Intended Learning Outcomes; Course Policies.

Introduction to Public Speaking. History and development; Communication. Definition, Elements, Levels, Public Speaker as Critical Thinker. Ethics of Public Speaking. Definitions; Principles; Ethical listening; Plagiarism; Civility in the Classroom. Speaking Confidently. Nervousness and Stage Fright; Building Confidence; Preparing your first speech. Listening. Importance; Process; Obstacles; Promoting Better Listening.

Midterm Period (Weeks 7–12)

Selecting your Speech Topic. Generate, select, and focus your purpose. Researching your topic. Assess, develop, and collect information. Organizing your speech. Formulating, dividing, developing and connecting key ideas. Outlining your speech. Functions, stages; Wording your speech. Functions of language; Effective language use. Introducing and concluding. Organizing the introduction and conclusion of speech.

Final Period (Weeks 13–18)

Delivering your speech. Principles of nonverbal delivery; methods of delivery; qualities of effective delivery; elements of delivery. Using Presentational Aids. Importance; Types; Strategies for using presentational aids. Kinds of Speeches. Informative: Topics, Guidelines, Samples; Persuasive: Types, Strategies, Samples; Argumentative: Making and refuting, Types, Fallacies, Selecting propositions; Special Occasion speeches: Introduction; Presentation; Acceptance; Tribute; Entertain; Impromptu. Culminating Activity: The Yearly Demy Awards Excellence in Public Speaking.
