Interview with a Tech Writer

I very much enjoyed and felt very comfortable with the interview that we did. We interview an Assistant General Manager who writes Technical Communication documents of specialty construction materials. The interview was conducted at their Company Building. The interviewee is very confident, passionate and profound. Her attitude was genuinely engaging. At the same time, she gave the impression of being confident and relaxed between the conversations. She spoke very convincing and provided depth answers and insights.

 

Her name is Mrs. Laymen L. Cantuba born on 1967, a 51 years of age. She is a wife and a mother of five. Mrs. Laymen was graduated in the profession of Civil Engineer in 1990. She was an employee for 28 years; she started to work in this field at the age of 24. She is now working at BATKINS Incorporated that offers special construction material, cleaning and maintenance product. Before she became Assistant General Manager, she once a Cadet Engineer, Assistant and now considered as part owner.

Nature of Technical documents written

Mrs. Laymen writes different Technical Communication documents such as Technical brochure, bulletin, reports, contract letters, collectible, estimates, quotation and sales of their products.  She also writes schedules, detailing, write ups, subcontracting and material’s methodology in the form of quotation. It is for their costumer to easily understand their services and products. Their company also provides on how to flood test a structures.

She stated that there are some problems arose related to Technical Communication that they are dealing with. This particular problem is about Technical paper, contract documents of their customer that is unsettled. They resolved this kind of problem by reaching an agreement to their customer using variation letter. This is a short form letter between two parties, used to vary an original contract between the same parties. This document is a letter of variation that can be used to record amendments to a contract or appointment that have been agreed between an employer and a contractor.

We asked her to give a piece of advice for the upcoming communicators and she said that being a Technical Writers must know what you are writing, you must have a background about on what you are writing. She also said that reading a books, magazines, and newspapers can help you to improve writing. And try to be on the position on what you were writing and we must aware on what is happening in the surrounding. Learning is very important, study and practice every day.

She also imparted that use a language that is easily to understand by many people, use simple words and straight to the point. You can use backup images if needed just be precise and vocabulary wise.
