The Perks of Being a Technical Communicator

A hardworking mother, that can support the studies of her five out of four sons and daughters, with the help of his husband, while committed in work is a truly blessing being her son. It gives me inspiration and pride knowing that her salary is directly paid on our studies and while a mother’s love is truly given to us.

Mrs. Laymen L. Cantuba, a 51 year old, licensed civil engineer, and the part owner of Batkins Incorporated. Back at 1990’s, she started as a cadet engineer doing tasks such as sales and project coordinator. Eventually, she became admin manager, assistant manager, and lastly to her current position, part owner.

Batkins Inc. has a sister company called “Stanbik”, it both offers manpower services to producing manufactured products such as cleaning and maintenance product. They worked with well-known corporations such as DMCI, specifically on condominiums and institutions like St. Luke’s Medical Center and Miriam College.

Nature of Technical Documents:

Technical Documents that the company utilize:

  • Quotations, it includes the pricing, materials specifications, and methodology of product with terms and conditions.
  • Technical Brochure, a technical data sheet with a detailed description, usage, and application method of a product, specifically Davco K-11 Flex, a waterproofing membrane.
  • Purchase Order, it contains specific quantity with price of materials or equipment needed in a project.
  • Bar Chart, plan and actual execution of a contract that includes days and manpower loading.
  • Sales Invoice and Delivery Receipt, it reflects the quantity, price, and amount of sales.
  • Accomplishment Report, reflects the accomplishment of a project for a particular period that serves as basis for billing and evaluation of cost.

Seeing her talk, she proves that she has a knowledge about her job and how she is professionally committed on it. It concludes that being a professional, it is essential to our job or life to become a technical writer or communicator.

Mrs. Cantuba advised that before creating the said technical documents, you should have knowledge about the subject and present it in a simple and precise form. She added that Technical Writing is a part of everyday work and everyday is a learning experience. She ended the interview with a quote:
